Good Schools Making the Grade


Rap Contest

The Good Schools Rap Contest was launched in 2005, the first year when all elementary school students were invited to participate. The contest is organized annually with Clear Channel, WJLB, with one of their producers working with the winners to produce a CD of the winning raps. 

Rap CDThe finalists  performed a capella in front of a panel of judges at WJLB studios downtown Detroit.The judges were Dr. Darius, Dorian Faulk and Desmond Travis from WJLB, Daphne Hughes from Mort Crim Communications as well as Dr. Allison Harmon.  Evaluating the performers on lyrics, rhythm, delivery, attitude and comprehension, the judges selected three winners:

2005 Winners

  • Make a Good School by Jamal Herbert, Delicia Lewis, Traesha Tillman and Brianna Vaughn from John R. King Academic and Performing Arts Academy.
  • Educational Alert 911 by Carlos Walker, Martel Neely, DeSean Rose and Marcel Crite from Mark Twain School & Academy.
  • School’s Cool by Loris Dennis from Ronald Brown Academy.

In 2005, the Detroit City Council awarded all three Good Schools Rap winners the Spirit of Detroit Award. The Good Schools Rap CD was produced and has been distributed at neighborhood meetings and events.
