Good Schools Making the Grade


Rap Contest

The Good Schools Rap Contest, launched in 2005, was continued in 2006. For the 2006 school year all middle school students were invited to participate. The contest is organized annually with Clear Channel, WJLB, with one of their producers working with the winners to produce a CD of the winning raps. 

Rap CDThe finalists performed a capella in front of a panel of judges at WJLB studios downtown Detroit.  The judges for 2006 included Dr. Darius, Kris Kelley and TJ from WJLB, Sharnita Johnson from The Skillman Foundation, and Carmen Price from the Good Schools Resource Center as well as Mrs. Sharon Lewis.    Evaluating the performers on lyrics, rhythm, delivery, attitude and comprehension, the judges selected three winners each year:

2006 Winners

  • "To Be Cool"  by Ashley Symone Johnson, Raven Jordan, and Brianna Cole from John R. King Academic & Performing Arts Academy
  • "Put Cha Up On Game" by Trey Taggert from Plymouth Education Center
  • "What you Know 'Bout School" by Victor Terrell Jr., James Hendrix, Jamal Williams, Jalen Hope and William Rembert from YMCA Service Learning Academy
  • "Rap A Good School" by Delicia Lewis from John R. King Academic & Performing Arts Academy
  • "Shoot for the Best and Nothing Less" by Brianna Mickie, Javon Hudson, Armonio Howard, Anthony Brooks, & Brien Scales from John R. King Academic and Performing Arts Academy
