The application form for participation in the Good Schools: Making the Grade Initiative is a self-assessment tool designed to help individual schools review their school using nine indicators to measure their strengths and weaknesses.
The Good Schools review team assigns scores to rate performance in each of the Indicators of School Success. The team makes a consensual recommendation on whether the applicant should continue to the next phase of a site visit.
Site visits are conducted to observe classrooms; interviews teachers, students, parents and support staff; checks for cleanliness in the halls, classrooms, and student lavatories. Schools receiving site visits are also invited to submit program proposals for funds to attain or maintain a specific indicator of success. After the site visit, the review team meets a second time to review original comments/ratings and to examine the site visit team’s recommendations before making final recommendations to The Skillman Foundation. These recommendations are subsequently presented to the Board of Trustees of The Skillman Foundation for approval and adoption.
